Professional Background

Mr Sujay Dheerendra is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon specialising in adult and paediatric spinal surgery, with particular expertise in scoliosis, complex spinal deformity and degenerative conditions of the spine.

He currently holds NHS Consultant appointments at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool, providing specialist spinal care across both paediatric and adult services. His practice encompasses the management of scoliosis and spinal deformity, cervical and lumbar degenerative conditions, spinal stenosis, disc prolapse, spondylolisthesis, spinal trauma and other complex spinal disorders.

Mr Dheerendra undertook his specialist orthopaedic training on the Mersey Orthopaedic Rotation in Liverpool. Following completion of his surgical training, he pursued advanced fellowship training in spinal surgery in Nottingham before completing the Liverpool Spinal Fellowship. This combined neurosurgical and orthopaedic fellowship provided extensive experience across the breadth of spinal surgery and helped shape his multidisciplinary approach to the management of complex spinal conditions.

He has extensive experience as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon and has performed more than 1,000 spinal procedures, ranging from lumbar decompression and microdiscectomy to complex spinal reconstruction, scoliosis correction and major spinal deformity surgery.

Areas of Expertise

Clinical Leadership & Specialist Practice

Before returning to Liverpool, Mr Dheerendra was a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the internationally recognised Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, where he also served as Clinical Lead for Spinal Surgery. He has held wider leadership roles in regional spinal services and NHS programmes focused on improving the quality and delivery of specialist care.

A particular focus of his current work is the development of integrated spinal services between Alder Hey and The Walton Centre, providing continuity of specialist care for young people with complex spinal conditions as they transition into adulthood. He is also actively involved in the development of complex adult spinal deformity services and multidisciplinary approaches to major spinal reconstruction.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Dheerendra has a strong interest in surgical education, clinical leadership and service improvement. He also provides specialist second opinions for patients with complex spinal conditions and for those considering major spinal surgery.

Mr Dheerendra undertakes private practice in Liverpool and Cheshire, seeing adults and young people with both routine and complex spinal conditions.
