Long hours at a desk are an occupational hazard for many IT professionals — developers, engineers, and analysts alike often spend the majority of their working day seated, frequently in deep concentration, with posture the last thing on their mind. Over time, this combination of prolonged sitting and poor ergonomic habits is one of the most common contributors to chronic back and neck pain seen in clinic.
Why IT Roles Are Especially Prone to This
A few features of typical IT work make posture-related back pain particularly common in this group:
Prolonged, uninterrupted sitting. Deep focus on coding or technical problem-solving often means hours pass without a break or change in position.
Forward head posture. Screens positioned too low or too far encourage the head to drift forward, increasing load through the cervical and upper thoracic spine.
Slouched or asymmetric sitting. Leaning to one side to reach a second monitor, or slumping into a chair during long stretches of concentration, places uneven strain on the spine.
Minimal movement breaks. Unlike many other roles, IT work rarely requires standing or walking during the day, reducing natural opportunities for the spine to move and recover.

Lower back pain often develops from prolonged sitting with poor lumbar support, increasing pressure on the lower spinal discs.
Neck and upper back pain frequently results from forward head posture, as the muscles supporting the neck work harder to counterbalance the head’s position.
Shoulder and mid-back tension can arise from hunched shoulders or reaching awkwardly for a keyboard, mouse, or second screen.

Practical Ergonomic Principles
While individual set-ups vary, some general principles make a meaningful difference:
Chair height and support: feet flat on the floor, knees roughly level with hips, and lumbar support maintaining the natural curve of the lower back
Screen position: top of the monitor at or just below eye level, and an arm’s length away, to reduce forward head posture
Keyboard and mouse placement: positioned so elbows can remain close to the body at roughly 90 degrees
Movement breaks: standing, stretching, or walking briefly every 30–45 minutes, even during focused work
When Posture Alone Isn't the Answer
Ergonomic adjustments help prevent and reduce symptoms, but for those already experiencing persistent pain, correcting the workstation alone is often not enough. Muscles and joints that have adapted to poor postural habits over months or years typically need active rehabilitation to fully recover.
This is where physiotherapy becomes particularly valuable — addressing muscle imbalances, restoring mobility, and building the strength and postural awareness needed to sustain a healthier working position long-term. Referral to a physiotherapist is often a sensible next step for anyone with persistent desk-related back or neck pain, alongside ergonomic changes at the workstation.
For the small number of cases where pain is severe, persistent despite treatment, or accompanied by neurological symptoms such as numbness or weakness, a specialist spinal assessment is warranted to rule out any underlying structural cause.
